Detroit Tiger’s opening day is a rite of spring to fans of the Detroit Tigers Baseball team. It’s a day to take off work and come downtown and support our team. The Detroit Tigers 2016 season opens Friday at Comerica Park and if you’re planning to head down to partake in the excitement, here’s what you need to know. Friday April 8 at 1:10pm the Detroit Tigers will take on the New York Yankees. This is a day to celebrate the home team and over a half million people are expected to hit the streets creating huge tailgate parties, filling the bars and restaurants or just walking the streets and sidewalks. You might even find yourself in a documentary as each year, Margrave Pictures, a Detroit film company, brings out the cameras to capture this exciting event on film.
Don’t have a ticket? Now worries. There are plenty of things to do and see just outside the ballpark. If you’re looking for some of the best outdoor parties, here are the locations:
- Woodward Avenue and I-75 – Woodward Ave. & Henry St.
- Town Pump Tavern featuring DJ Zig-Zag spinning tunes outside of the all day long from 11am to 10pm at 100 W. Montcalm St. Tent and bar open 8am with a possible $10 cover charge.
- 97.1 Radio Station’s free block party is happening at Grand Circus Park 1601 Woodward Ave.
- Party at Madison Ave. & Brush St.
- Centre Park Bar 1407 Randolph St.
Besides these outdoor parties, dozens of restaurants and bars will be filled to capacity within the 3 mile radius around Comerica Park. If you plan to start at one of these popular pre-game locations, many of them have shuttle busses to and from the game. You should call to find out first though. The key to the day is getting there early. The game starts at 1:10 but the first party goers start arriving as early as 6 am!
